From Cats to Catfish: Lessons in Crisis Communications

John Lucas, UW–Madison

  • Despite our best preparation, crises happen. How can you get in front of an issue and develop a response strategy while dealing with the 24/7 news cycle and the huge role of social media? Hear how two vastly different campuses dealt with two vastly different crises: a “catfish” issue at the University of Notre Dame, and an animal research issue at UW–Madison.

10:45 a.m.–1:45 p.m.

Creative Services Working Group Meeting

Members of the former Big Ten Publications group will convene to discuss relevant issues in the creative services.

Big Brand on Board

Susan Holloway, Michigan State University

Tricia Dickinson, UW–Madison

Faculty Communicators – Substance and Style

Mark Johnson, UW–Madison Center for Dairy Research

  • Your faculty members are perhaps your strongest allies in creating and disseminating original content. See how Wisconsin faculty members share the gospel of dairy, but manage to weave in important facts about our land-grant outreach mission, our work with students, and the role the university plays in the state. Plus, free samples!

4:30–6 p.m.

Rooftop Reception

Pyle Center

702 Langdon St., Madison WI

  • Enjoy a beautiful summer sunset on the shores of Lake Mendota with libations and Wisconsin cuisine.

Dinner Among Friends

  • One of the best things about Madison is its abundance of fantastic restaurants. Whether you’re in the mood for a burger and fried cheese curds, a farm-to-table locally sourced meal, or inventive international cuisine, there’s something for every palate. We’ll provide recommendations and guides to a few of our favorite places, or you can select your own option. If you’re not in the mood for a big dinner, we encourage you to walk next door to our famed Wisconsin Union Terrace and enjoy a beverage or some Babcock Hall Dairy ice cream while you watch the sun set.

And how do you navigate the terrible (intentional or unintentional) videos out there?

9:30–10:30 a.m.

From the Outside Looking in: An Agency Perspective on Higher Ed
